Protect your community
When emergencies happen they affect all areas of society. Your time and energy as volunteers touches the lives of others. Explore the ways in which you can help your community now, during and after an emergency.
Before an emergency
Sign up as an emergency volunteer by joining the Bedfordshire and Luton Emergency Volunteers Executive Committee (BLEVEC). This is a local partnership of charities, community groups and volunteers who work together as part of BLLRF to prepare for, and respond to, emergencies.
How to join the Bedfordshire emergency volunteers
You can join the volunteers in two ways.
- You can become a member of our own group of emergency volunteers and specialise in emergency response by contacting volunteering@bllrf.org.uk or calling us on 0300 3004145.
- You can join an organisation that is already a member of BLEVEC (click here for a full list and their contact details).

During an emergency
There are many opportunities for you to be involved during an emergency. You can:
- check on your friends and neighbours
- if you are part of voluntary group, ask your coordinator to see if they need any help
- think of an organisation that has helped you, and help them!
- listen to the radio and wait to hearhow you can help from the emergency services
Remember don’t put yourself at risk. This is about small, neighbourly actions, such as helping with shopping, that can make a tremendous difference at this time. Act sensibly and sensitively with your neighbours.
After an emergency
If you are already part of a community group, ask your service coordinator to see if they need any help.
